I grew up camping and hiking—spending weekends in the mountains, sleeping under stars, and learning early on how to respect the land that held us.
Those experiences shaped how I see the world.
Now, as a photographer and as a mother, that connection feels even more important. I want my daughter—and any future children—to grow up with those same wild, open spaces. Places where you can breathe deeply, explore freely, and feel small in the best possible way.
That’s why I chose to become a Leave No Trace Aware Photographer and complete formal training in Leave No Trace principles.
It wasn’t just a box to check. It was a commitment.
A way of ensuring that the work I create doesn’t just preserve memories for my couples—it also protects the landscapes we’re standing in.
Because these places aren’t just part of my job. They’re part of my life.
Photography Shouldn’t Come at the Cost of Nature
Adventure sessions and elopements often take us into some of the most beautiful locations in Southern California and beyond. But those places stay beautiful for one reason: they’re respected.
Leave No Trace photography is a commitment to keeping natural spaces as undisturbed as possible. It means we’re intentional with every step, every movement, and every decision made during your session.
Because no photo is worth damaging the land it was taken on.
The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace (and How I Practice Them)
These principles guide every session I photograph:
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
We choose locations thoughtfully, considering weather, foot traffic, seasonal conditions, and environmental sensitivity. Good planning reduces impact before we even arrive.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
We stick to sand, rock, established paths, and already impacted areas whenever possible to protect fragile ecosystems.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Everything we bring in goes back out. No exceptions. This includes small items like florals, ribbons, or packaging.
4. Leave What You Find
Natural objects stay where they belong. Flowers, shells, rocks, and plants are not moved or taken for styling.
5. Minimize Campfire Impacts
While not always applicable to photography sessions, the principle still reflects fire safety awareness and respecting fire restrictions in natural areas—especially in Southern California.
6. Respect Wildlife
We observe from a distance and never interfere with animals or their habitats for the sake of a photo.
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors
We work efficiently, respectfully, and with awareness that these spaces are shared by everyone.
These principles are simple—but powerful. And when practiced consistently, they preserve the integrity of the places we all love.
Why I Took the Leave No Trace Aware Course
As my photography evolved into more adventure-based elopements and intimate outdoor sessions, I realized something important:
Loving nature isn’t enough—we have to actively protect it.
Taking the Leave No Trace Aware course gave me the education and structure to ensure I was doing just that. It deepened my understanding of how even small choices during a session can have a lasting impact on fragile environments.
It also reinforced something I already believed deeply:
that photography should never take more from a place than it gives.
What Leave No Trace Looks Like in Practice
This isn’t about restriction—it’s about awareness.
Here’s what I practice during every session:
We stay on durable surfaces whenever possible.
We respect wildlife and natural habitats.
We leave what we find.
We don’t alter the landscape for photos.
We pack everything out.
We keep sessions intentional, low-impact, and mindful.
Why This Matters to Me
I didn’t choose photography just to create beautiful images.
I chose it because I care about the in-between moments—the quiet pauses before vows, the laughter that comes when you forget the camera is there, the way people soften when they’re somewhere that feels bigger than everyday life.
Those experiences are deeply connected to place.
